Some of the best conditions this year over the northern hemisphere combined with the special anniversary occasion, plenty of publicity, DXpedition stations and six HQ stations. These were the ingredients for a record Commonwealth Contest - record entries, record scores. Many participated for the first time and 74 stations celebrated this special occasion, by winning a ‘Gold’ or ‘Silver’ certificate for working 60 or 50 Band/Call Areas. The total of 164 entrants was the highest since 1947! Low A and K led to conditions being appreciably better than in the last two years, though not all areas were equally blessed. Both paths between G and VK/ZL on 20m left much to be desired. However, most entrants who sent comments with their logs clearly enjoyed the contest: some were almost ecstatic! The special character of the event, the presence of numerous old-timers, as well as the chance to work some notable DX, all gave much pleasure. As Ray, 9M2OM, put it, ‘..the most enjoyable contest ...for many years...’ and ‘...it was wonderful to hear and work so many of the pre-war participants’.
The UK is more in evidence at the top of the Restricted section; the clear winner was Dietmar, VK2APK, but second and third places were occupied respectively by Clive, GM3POI, and Chris, G3SJJ, with very similar scores. The fourth placed is John, ZB2EO, who as usual gave away many bonuses to Gs and others for only 5 points a time for himself. VE2ABO deserves special mention he worked 16 call areas using an output of only 4 watts. Vive le QRP!
This year there was no single-band section, but Open and Restricted (12 hour) sections instead, 109 opting for the former and 49 the latter. A number of entrants in the Restricted section are determined to be in the Open section next year. We were very pleased to receive an Listener entry from BRS 88921, who commented, ‘very interesting and worthwhile’. VK3ZC and others have asked for bonus details in the results and we are pleased to oblige.
Two Canadian stations reported that VE1UA is in fact in New Brunswick and claimed him as VE9. Numerous other stations worked VE1UA and included him as a VE1. The Committee decided that since QTH information is not exchanged, most entrants would be unaware that he was in New Brunswick and therefore he was counted in all logs as VE1.
A log from Vic, VE7UZ, a long-time participant in BERU and 1957 winner, arrived too late for adjudication (his claimed score was 1375, with 52 Bonuses and 39 Band/Call Areas). He, like others of our old friends, suffered a stroke recently, and there are a number with health problems; to all we send our best wishes. And sadly, two entrants listed here are now so soon Silent Keys: David Hill, G4IQM, and Mike Matthews, G3JFF. We were also very sorry to hear of the passing this year of Mal Geddes, Z23JO.
As usual the rarer Commonwealth stations were pestered by unwanted callers, as GW3SB put it, ‘it’s amazing how many new Commonwealth countries there are in Eastern Europe’. ZL7ZB was worked by 9 entrants but he was a phoney, and we are grateful to Ian , G3KZR, for his help in showing him up (the real ZL7ZB was not on the air at the time, pity, perhaps next year). However there is another side to unwanted callers. Who was the station who passed off that persistent BY5 with an abrupt ‘ur 599052 but this is the Commonwealth Contest.73.’ and later realised that the BY5 was in Jamaica !
While the total entry was up on 1996 by 61%, participation increased slightly to 715 stations, with 421 Gs, 137 VEs (both up on 1996), 58 VKs and 29 ZLs (both down on 1996). Ten ZS calls appeared in logs, but none submitted an entry. Once again, VKs did well, with 45% of participants sending a log (thanks to John, VK3ZC ) Another familiar feature: the G stations (and some from elsewhere) with good potential scores who are regrettably absent from the tables.
The total number of call areas was somewhat increased, to 61: 3B8, 3DA, 4S, 5N, 5X, 6Y, 7Q, 8Q, 9G, 9H, 9J, 9M2, 9V, A3, AP, G (incl. GD, GI, GM and GW), GB (HQ), S2, S7, V2, V8, VE1-9, VE3 (HQ), VK1-9, VK4(HQ), VO1, VP2E, VP9, VQ9, VR2/VS6, VS6 (HQ), VU, VU (HQ), Z2, ZB2, ZD8 (HQ), ZK1, ZL1-4, ZS1-2, 5-6. Which just shows what DX there is for those with keen ears. The new Commonwealth members, C9 and TJ, did not make use of the opportunity to join in.
All bands showed increased activity, most marked on 15m. 80m: 279 stations (including 156 G) from 39 call areas; 40m: 483 (273 G), 47; 20m: 605 (408 G), 46; 15m: 404 (286 G), 47 and 10m: 77 (43 G), 22 call areas.
Although computer logging is on the increase, for a contest like the Commonwealth many still use tried and tested manual methods, hand-written or typed logs still account for almost 50%.. Judging by the comments, some of those using computers are evidently still learning the business. Among the paper logs, a few were impeccably presented, with correctly made dupe sheets and lists of bonuses (as required by the Rules!), and deserve special commendation for the great help they gave to the adjudicator.
On conditions
G3GMS, ‘ really enjoyed the good conditions.’, but from G3JJG, ‘ poor conditions’.and surprisingly, G3LET,’ even 10 was open to VK, though I didn’t get to work any’. In the southern hemisphere,.VI4WIA, ‘ conditions rather poor’. ‘Gs had much higher numbers than usual, I don’t know who they worked’, but even there VK6VZ notes , ‘ amazing opening on 15m to Europe and Africa’. The good conditions produced, ‘ massive pile ups’, ZD860CC and from.ZL1MH, ‘most outstanding signals were V2/GM0GAV and 6Y5HN’ and a frustrated comment from V2/GM0GAV, ‘9J2BO was 569 on 10m 1 hour before contest, but NIL by 1200Z!’
On learning the tricks
G0WHO thought that BERU was the, ‘toughest contest so far this year’ and G0/N4AR, ‘another 6 or 7 tries and I will get the hang of it!’
General
Pre war entrant, G3GC, ‘60th anniversary of my first entry, as an SWL in 1937’. and a word of thanks from G3OZF for , ‘ a magnificent effort from the ‘special’ stations’.and recognition from VE3XN for, ‘..a historic operating event’. VK3MR lamented,’ nix rhombics now!!’, and from ZL1MH. ‘ I guess we would all like to be around for the centennial!’
Several stations asked for clarification of the position of special call signs. This rule applies to UK stations only and is part of the RSGB General Rules. It does not apply to stations outside the UK. For 1998 Hong Kong is deleted and the Junior Rosebowl will be awarded to the leading station in the Restricted Section as was originally the case many years ago.
The date for the 61st Commonwealth Contest will be the 14 and 15th March 1998. A special certificate will again be awarded to any station working more than 61 band-call areas. With improving conditions this should be possible for even moderately equipped stations who operate with a bit of persistence. Copies of this article will again be sent to all non UK entrants. . CU in BERU 98 !
